Total Solar Eclipse: July 21/22 2009

July 21/22: Total Solar Eclipse at 29 Cancer 7:35 pm Pacific and 10:35 pm Eastern on July 21, 3:35 am in London on July 22.

The second New Moon in Cancer this year, this eclipse is a major astronomical event, with an unusually wide path of totality, lasting 3.4 hours and passing over a wide swathe of Asia. The eclipse will be visible over China and the countries to its West and South-East, suggesting that this part of the world will undergo some fundamental changes in the coming months. Eclipses affect the area they traverse for a period before and after the actual moment of the eclipse and are traditionally associated with natural disasters: floods, seismic events, weather extremes; or human-caused disturbance (from the astrologer’s perspective these are another kind of natural disaster). The riots in Western China of July 5 occurred along the eclipse path.

Major total eclipses like this one appear to affect the whole world as well as the area that falls under the eclipse path. Individuals with planetary placements or angles at the eclipse degree (29 Cancer) may also find their lives undergo change. 29 degrees of any sign is considered to be a “critical” degree, meaning that the vibration of that part of the sky is emphasized in that degree. In this case, issues of home, security, and maternity are highlighted. The US is a strongly Cancerian nation, (and France also, to a lesser extent) and one can hope for positive action around housing and the environment around the time of the eclipse and in the months following.
