Jerome Kerviel’s stock market dealings were discovered by his superiors at Societé Generale on Friday evening, January 18th, and revealed to the public on January 24th. He appears to have committed the most massive bank fraud every seen, and it is now speculated that the bank’s feverish attempts to remedy the disaster contributed to, and may even have sparked, stock market instability (see http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2008/jan/25/banking.france).

Kerviel’s date of birth is January 11 1977 (time as yet unknown). He has Sun, Mercury and Mars in Capricorn: this combination signals, at its best, excellent executive ability and skill at managing resources, and at its worst, greed and acquisitiveness. In Kerviel’s case, the stellium squares Pluto in Libra, so is likely to act negatively. This whole pattern suggests a criminal tendency and potential for sabotage of self and others. But the stellium also makes harmonious aspects: the Sun trines Jupiter, while Mars sextiles Venus, suggesting if he got the better of this sabotaging tendency he could be very successful. Saturn is debilitated (weak) in Leo and sextiles Pluto, squares Uranus and trines Neptune. His judgement can be poor, but again, if he learns some lessons, he could do well in life.

In this case, Kerviel is not simply an individual but a focal point for a collective imbalance — the unchecked financial greed that has dominated since the 1980’s. Kerviel’s nodes are at 29 degrees of Aries/Libra, and were being exactly aspected by Pluto at the time of his downfall. The Moon’s Nodes represent the public and the zeitgeist, the mood of the times. It was perhaps Kerviel’s fate to represent this, to be the scapegoat for an era. Pluto in the last degree of Sag is showing up the extremities of the Pluto in Sagittarius period of financial expansion, much of it fuelled by speculation and mirage.

At the time Kerviel’s fraud was discovered, transiting Saturn was exactly opposing his natal Venus in Pisces, and transiting Jupiter was on his midheaven and Mars. Saturn put the brakes on his dreams of wealth, and Jupiter highlighted his public profile, in the worst possible way.

Pluto enters Capricorn on January 26 2008, and apart from a foray back into Sagittarius between mid-June and the end of November, will be in Cap until 2024. I wrote a review a while back of What Happened When Pluto Was In Sag (see http://planetaryenergies.net/2007/11/21/a-review-of-cultural-change-during-pluto-in-sagittarius/). If you didn’t read that at the time I suggest you read it now, because it will make this article more meaningful.

All we can really tell with Pluto ahead of time are the themes. How exactly these themes will manifest is always a surprise. For example, we astrologers knew Pluto in Sagittarius was going to bring changes in religious ideas and probably fanaticism. We didn’t know the Twin Towers were going to be destroyed and the subsequent events that have unfolded from there. So what I am going to write here about Pluto in Capricorn describes broad themes but there are no concrete predictions, and a lot of what I say will appear contradictory. This is because Pluto takes things to extremes in both/all directions. It amplifies. It lights up the areas of life signified by the part of the zodiac in which it is traveling. So we get illumination, but it usually involves upheaval and there are always phases when this is not comfortable, not at all.

Using Tarot symbolism, we could say that when Pluto transits are strongly felt (usually when they are sparked by aspects to other planets or to national or personal charts), they are like the Tower, the Death card, and the Star all rolled into one. And then there are periods when Pluto is retrograde that feel like The Hanged Man. Transformation in the area affected by the transit is going to happen, like it or not.

The last two times Pluto transitted this part of the sky, in the 1520’s and 1770’s, there was plenty of international upheaval with big changes in the control of large tracts of territory. In 1520 Spain conquered the Aztecs and took over Mexico, beginning the colonisation of the Americas. In 1521 Luther posted his manifesto at the Diet of Worms, and the Catholic Church lost its long hegemony as the monopoly religion in Europe. 1526 saw the founding of the Mughal Empire, which effectively ruled India until 1857 when it was deposed by the British. The next time Pluto got back to this part of the sky in the 1770’s, much of North America became independent from its colonial overlord, forming a brand new country: the United States. (The US was thus born under Pluto in Capricorn, so will be experiencing its Pluto return, but not till 2022.) We are likely to see similar changes in national control and the structures of empires over the next 16 years.

Pluto in Capricorn subtly changes the overall flavor of collective life as well as coinciding with big world changes. What will this look like, in the first and second decades of the 21st century? Let’s take a look at what Capricorn represents, and what Pluto represents, and see what this combination, at this stage in history, might bring.

Capricorn represents big business, financial markets, the work ethic, social status, stability of social, political and economic structures, and our collective attitude to money and resources. At its best, Capricorn thinks big, but realistically. At its worst it either thinks big foolishly, or tightens up and contracts due to an overly materialist attitude to life. Capricorn can get very afraid of losing stuff, status, anything perceived to be an entitlement or a belonging. Conversely, Capricorn can be hugely creative and eternally confident that it can pick up the pieces and succeed again, is never afraid of hard work, and is the ultimate re-inventer, so comfortable is this sign with making stuff from dreams. Capricorn loves to make manifest. Capricorn is literal, greedy, earthy and flesh-loving. Healthy, balanced Capricorns make very good lovers, so happy are they with the realm of the body and with the sheer pleasure of being alive.

Pluto rules the underground, secrets, processes of transformation, and deep wealth. Pluto uncovers that which has been hidden and in so doing stirs the collective pot, awakening new methods, structures, ideas, fads, and obsessions.

Pluto transiting Capricorn thus promises radical changes in social and political organization, financial management and social perspective on finances, ideas about fame, celebrity and social strata, and a stern look at our management of collectively owned resources. By the time 2024 rolls around all these areas of life will have been turned upside down, shaken all around, and repositioned. We will collectively relate to the earth in a new way, as well as to the physical flesh of the human body. Our perception of the relationship between form and the formless, between matter and spirit, is up for a long-term review. This could be ghastly in a Frankensteinian way, or it could be sublime. We might learn how to manifest more gracefully, to end world hunger, to share resources wisely. On the other hand, we may see an even sharper split between the haves and have-nots. There will be substantial changes in the ways we organize money — financial institutions we thought were solid will falter, prices and exchange values will be all over the place, and both personal, corporate and national wealth will change, both up and down. The ways we relate to resources of all kinds will be questioned, changed, and reorganized.

This passage will be paradoxical. Pluto gives as well as takes, and the Saturn-ruled sign of Capricorn builds and manifests just as much as it prunes and pares down to essentials. From Pluto, God of the underworld, we get the word Plutocrat - the supremely wealthy. During this phase we may discover something that will make life on earth more abundant. We may also have something we thought was deeply necessary taken away.

Jupiter moved into Capricorn on December 19 2007 and will stay in that part of the zodiac until January 6 2009. Sign changes of the planets are somewhat mysterious to me: experience shows that they are meaningful, but while I can easily construct a rationale for how aspects between planets affect life on earth, why should some idea apparently made up by human beings, about dividing the sky into 12 chunks of 30 degrees and giving them fanciful names, mean anything? But it seems it does.

So what does it mean for us that Jupiter now resides in the part of the sky deemed to be ruled by Saturn and symbolised by the sea-goat? For starters, this is the least comfortable place in the zodiac for Jupiter to be. Jupiter and Saturn are antithetical: one expands, the other contracts; one is warm and generous, the other cold and parsimonious. Both influence politics, with Jupiter ruling kings and Saturn despots. As Jupiter is not at ease in the realm of Saturn, it is said to be in a state of fall when in Capricorn (and conversely, is exalted when in the opposite sign of Cancer).

So while Jupiter is in Capricorn, its powers are diminished and operate in a Saturnian way. Thus themes associated with Jupiter in Capricorn are the exposure of previous over-confidence in business and government, the tragic aspect of wealth, the limitation of previous expansions, and generally, chickens coming home to roost.

Famous events occurring when Jupiter was in Capricorn include the sinking of the Titanic (and curiously, the Christmas edition of Doctor Who in the UK was all about a spaceship named the Titanic that threatened to destroy the Earth). Kennedy beat Nixon under a Capricorn Jupiter, but of course, died tragically later in office. Nixon met his comeuppance under the next Capricorn Jupiter in 1972, with the Watergate scandal. Clinton’s dalliance with Monica Lewinsky began as Jupiter moved into Capricorn in late 1995, and began to be exposed while Jupiter was still being influenced by Saturn (but now in the sign of Aquarius). Jupiter in Capricorn is not good for world leaders, for kings and rulers. In the very short space of time since Jupiter moved into Capricorn last month we’ve already seen the assassination of Benazir Bhutto and the chaos of the Kenyan election.

What is Jupiter in Capricorn good for? Well, it is a good time for most Capricorns, who will see the part of their chart occupied by the Sun really take off in the coming year. It’s a good time for people who have been working diligently behind the scenes and need a little Jupiterian buzz to lighten the load, especially if while in Capricorn Jupiter will make beneficial aspects to key planets or angles in their charts. It’s a good time for puncturing illusions and scams, especially where these involve corruption and hubris.

Jupiter lends dignity wherever it travels, whether or not it is in good shape. The best way to engage with the dignity of Jupiter while it travels through Capricorn is to Slow Down, Think Deeply, and whenever possible, take the High Road.

Take a Saturnian, long view of your life, and remember that you are a precious soul in your very own way, however it manifests and whatever your apparent personal fate, and that your being is sacred and unique.

The highest manifestation of Jupiter in Capricorn is in the grounded sensation of the royalty within you, experienced in a non-egotistical way. What were you born to do? What comes most naturally to you? In what activities do you feel most grounded? What skills have you worked to develop over many years? How does this royal, golden, inherent, inherited and diligently worked-on gift manifest in daily life? How can you carry yourself with more dignity as you do these actions, this loving, this work?
